Chemical & Enzyme Peels

Our skin routinely goes through a lot of rough experiences throughout the year, including exposure to the sun, exposure to harsh cosmetics, repeated facial expressions, acne scars, etc. All this damage can result in the outer layer of the skin to become unhealthy, dull and bring signs of ageing quite early on.

What is involved in a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top dull, dry and uneven skin to make way for a more youthful, smoother skin to grow back. Chemical peels use lactic, glycolic or salicylic acid to introduce a controlled damage to the skin to boost collagen and resurface the area making it look youthful, firmer and radiant.

At LLC Cosmetic Laser Clinics, we use mild to medium chemical peels as an adjuvant treatment to treat pigmentation, lines and wrinkles, mild to moderate acne scarring with fractional resurfacing and/or non ablative resurfacing to achieve maximum results.

Are chemical peels safe?

Like any treatment at LLC, only dermal therapy certified staff will perform any skin treatments ensuring your safety is never compromised. We only perform treatments based on a comprehensive assessment of your skin type and rule out contraindications prior to the procedure.

How should I prepare before a peel?

After you’ve had a consultation process you will be given instructions on what to do before the procedure. We recommend:

  • Avoiding any retin-A use for at least 1 week
  • Informing us of any medications you take
  • Taking antiviral medication if you have a history of cold sores to prevent breakouts
  • Ceasing of waxing, epilating, using depilatory creams prior to the peel procedure
  • Ceasing exfoliations 1 week before and after the treatment.

What to expect?

After the procedure, your skin will go pink and feel like a mild to moderate sun burn. Superficial chemical peels do not require downtime or recovery, however, you are required to protect yourself from the sun for at least 1 week by using an SPF 50+. General tips to keep in mind include:

  • Cleaning the treated area 4-6 times daily for a week
  • Moisturising the skin often
  • Avoiding sun
  • Avoiding harsh chemicals, cosmetics and scrubbers for 2 weeks post procedure

Depending on the type of treatment which in turn depends on the skin condition, your skin care consultant will recommend a series of 2-3 peels about 3-4 weeks apart. Post care is extremely important to ensure you are at a low risk of hyper or hypo pigmentation (i.e. lightening or darkening of the skin).

What is an enzyme peel and how does it work?

Enzyme peels are acids extracted from fruits and vegetables like pumpkin, pineapple, papaya, etc., These also work towards exfoliating dry, dull and flaky skin to leave behind a nourished new layer that is radiant and rejuvenated. No live skin cells are removed like chemical peels. Since no harsh chemicals are involved, the chances of post treatment complications like hyper and hypo pigmentation are not of a concern. A recommended treatment for those with darker skin types or sensitive skin.
